Social Media Policies
There are many organisations who still ‘ban’ the use of social media by their employees, usually by blocking access to all known social media sites from their corporate network.
This is usually driven by fear and ignorance: fear that employees will not get on with their work but will spend all their time on Facebook talking to their friends or working on their virtual farm; ignorance of the fact that it is the innovative organisations across the world who are empowering their employees to communicate with customers, the markets, suppliers, and potential recruits, through enterprise social media.
Of course, with so much online conversation happening through mobile devices, such bans are rarely effective, yet companies can still find themselves in hot water for inappropriate online behavior of their staff (even more so with the recent changes in the remit of the Advertising Standards Authority).
A rigorous set of policies can cut through all of this, particularly when they are backed up with creative and interesting ways to make sure all staff are aware of them and understand them.
Before creating the necessary policies, eSocialMedia consultants can work with your organisation to understand some key issues:
Which parts of the organisation’s social media strategy should be reflected in the policy?
What will the sign-off procedure be?
How will staff be educated and trained on the elements of the policy?
How will we know if it is working?
What is the process and timeframe for review and amendment?
